Product Description

Dual Fault Protection Cable Kit to Link Power Supplies

One of the unique features of our X6B, X7B, X11, X12, X15, and X20 breakout board adapters is the ability to link two power supplies together in such a way that if one power supply fails, then the second will automatically shut off.

We are often tempted to power a single hashing board with two power supply units in ASIC mining. An example of this would be with an Antminer S7 requiring 1400watts because, in today's market, the cost of a 1500watt PSU is very high. What if we could power the S7 with two 750watt, which are much cheaper and just as good? We can't as we would need to split the power of a single hashing board between both of the PSUs. This is playing with fire because if one PSU fails, then the other will power 1/2 of the hashing board; everything will get real hot, real fast.

Our X6B, X7B, X11, X12, X15, and X20 breakout boards solve this problem with what we call "Dual Fault Protection". This cable kit, combined with any two of our advanced breakout boards, syncs the power supply units together; if one fails then the other automatically shuts off, consequently protecting your equipment.

** This mode renders the on/off power button inoperative. Turn the linked power supplies on or off by cutting the AC flow. IE: unplugging the power cord  **

Because of how the dual fault protection cables function, they are not compatible with the interconnect sync cables. You will not be able to use the dual fault and sync cables together.

How to Link Two Power Supplies

  1. Turn off and unplug the power cords from both PSUs.
  2. Connect the Molex of one cable to the first PSU, then connect the 4pin end of the same cable to the second PSU. Refer to the last picture for an example of this step.
  3. Connect the Molex of the second cable to the second PSU, and then connect the 4pin to the first PSU.
  4. Double-check that all 4 connection points are secure. Both cables must be used for the dual fault protection to work.
  5. Plug in the power cords to turn on both PSUs.

Includes:

  • (2) individual fault protection cables which must be used together.

Pictured X11 breakout board adapter and PSUs are not included; other products pictured for reference only.

Can this be used with the x7 and x8, breakout boards

Support

No – Only the X11 and X6b “will be available this week at $22” can use this feature. The X6b is exactly like the X11 except it as only 8 ports and a smaller footprint

Hi – what should I do if I want to use 3 PSU with failure protection?

Unfortunately at this time our fault protection feature only works for two power supplies at most.

This feature was design for two only.

Will this work with the ZSX and X11 Breakout board?

Support

Yes with the X11. I see no use for the ZSX. The reason we design this was that many customers stuck with 110/120AC could not achieve more than 1200watt on a single PSU and using two PSUs is not safe if there is one PSU that fails. Here, with this cable kit if one PSU fails the other will shut down within 3sec. Theorictcaly it should also work on the ZSX because that board is an X11 modified.

I am curious about this as well. I bought two 1200W PSUs one with a X11 and one ZSX. I was planning on using those two to power my mining rig, but after reading your comment I’m wondering if I need to cancel the order and come up with a different configuration? I didn’t see anything under the items that said don’t use two PSUs together. I figured it was safe since X11 / X6B / ZSX BREAKOUT BOARD 4-PIN INTERCONNECT SYNC CABLE made it seem like that’s exactly what it’s used for along with this X11 AND X6B BREAKOUT BOARD FAULT PROTECTION CABLE KIT. If it’s not safe I’ll need to cancel my order and come up with a new solution that’ll work with my 110v. Is there a better recommendation for this type of setup? I need about 1200W total for my rig. I guess I could also split my rig into two separate rigs, but I would need to change the X11 I ordered to a ZSX.

You can use two PSUs together safely in GPU mining. Unlike ASIC mining where a hashing board may become underpowered when using more than one PSU. We created the Protection fault cable just for ASIC mining. With GPU’s if your motherboard shutdown and your GPU are still powered they will stop hashing and vice versa. So as long as you don’t power a single GPU with two separate PSU !! Please don’t do that:-) The sync cable is used to make our Breakout board in sync when turn on or off… Cheers

Thank you for the quick reply and clarification that makes sense now. I must have missed the part where this cable is specifically for ASIC miners. Happy to hear that my original configuration will work with what I’m planning.

Works very well as intended. Note that any power cord inserted will initiate system by default and “power” button becomes “reset” essentially. That reset functions in synchronicity. Helps with BTC-X37 motherboards where you may not be able to use 1 PSU for 8 GPU. Note that with dell type PSU, one reset initiates “amber” warning light. Pressing again properly resets, so total 2 presses on one breakout. Hope this helps someone!
